The 11 Trends We're Keeping for 2014

1. The Booted-Up Suit
How to do take your wear-to-work rig from blasé to badass? Throw on a pair of boots that toe the line between style and substance. Chelsea boots add a bit of rocker edge, while dressier combat boots (think more Saint Laurent than surplus store) let you stand out from the 9-5 regiment without making you look like a slouch. The easiest way to ace the look? Just think of them as dress shoes that go past your ankles.
2. The Pinch-Hitting Baseball Jacket
Let your motorcycle and denim jackets ride the pine (your closet's made out of pine, right?) for a while and switch 'em out for a sleek baseball jacket. Unlike the varsity styles high school jocks might've rocked, these are cut as slim as your favorite sport coat. Speaking of which, feel free to throw this on over a casual button-down shirt and a knit tie to really knock the athletic aesthetic trend out of the stratosphere.
3. The Patterned Shirt You Forgot You Were Wearing
What happens when you pair a bold shirt with a conservative suit? You get the best of both worlds. The shirt's doing all the talking, while the suit and tie mean people should take it seriously. All you have to do is act like you woke up that way. So when people ask you about your patterned shirt, just glance down and nonchalantly reply: "Oh, this old thing?"
4. The Sartorial Tough Guy
Taking a cue from '50s greasers (channel The Outsiders, not Danny Zuko) and British Teddy boys, these time-honored ruffians subverted classic menswear styles by behaving badly. Not that we'd suggest getting into bar fights in a pricey biker jacket and two-tone loafers, but it's nice to look like someone who shouldn't be stepped to. Labels like N. Hoolywood andSaint Laurent were inspired by the stylish rebels of the past to outfit today's fashionable iconoclasts, and the result is freaking awesome. So stock up on pomade and work on your switchblade maneuvers (but maybe start with a comb).
5. The Pants You Wear Just Like Jeans
There's nothing wrong with denim, but sometimes you just need to dress beyond the dungarees. Slim-fitting chinos are always a great alternative—and they don't even have to be boring old khaki. But if you really wanna get your pants game on point, look no further than a properly tailored pair of trousers. Whether you get 'em with a suit or by themselves, make sure they fit perfect, with a cuffed hem that lets your footwear shine. And don't worry about the trim silhouette cramping your style—if Lil' Buck can move like this in perfectly-fitting pants, you've got zero excuses.
6. The Plaid Power Suit
Suit game got you down? Need a little extra push to liven up your work wardrobe? Jolt it up with a plaid suit that'll have you stand out in a sea of sharkskin gray—in the good way. All you need to remember to pull it off like a boss is that the shirt, tie, and shoes have to balance out the pattern. It's a guaranteed way to get you noticed, and that's a good thing, because while some suits make you look confident, this one shows you've got serious cojones.
7. The Sweater That's "Nauti By Nature"
Nautical-inspired style is ironically a ship that's never gonna sail. From winter peacoats to long sleeve striped Breton shirts, many of the menswear staples borne from the trend are actually timeless. What does change, however, are fit, colors, and who's currently making the freshest one on the planet. Right now, the best damn nautical sweater money can buy is from Saint Laurent, but that doesn't mean there isn't a plethora of others that'd look just as good on you. Whether layered under a heavy coat during the cold weather, or worn over a soft cotton tee in the spring, the nautical sweater's an indispensable layer no guy should go without. So cop one faster than you can say "Ahoy, matey!"
8. The Seersucker Suit That's Not For Suckers
Unfortunately, plenty of offices still merit suiting up when the mercury rises as well as dressier occasions like summer weddings. Fortunately, there are plenty of fabrics that make the heat feel a little more forgiving. One of them is seersucker, and it's gotten cooler in more ways than one. Today's seersucker suits give plenty of Southern comfort without making you look like a Southern lawyer. That's because designers have ditched the traditional blue and white stripes in favor of versatile tones like navy and charcoal. Even brands like J.Crew are even sourcing seersucker fabrics from Japan—which makes them all the more enviable among #menswear nerds.
9. The Go-Anywhere Cargo Pants
Need more proof that men's fashion is as cyclical as the trends your girlfriend hops on and off? Cargo pants became unmistakably chic again. The key difference is that they're a lot trimmer than their '90s heyday, and the pockets are moving more towards the front, something you can thank American designers like Michael Bastian for. You can rock them with technical, sporty pieces like down vests and sneakers, or throw them under a slim sportcoat, rumpled oxford, and suede chukka boots. Overstuffing the pockets messes up how your pants should fit, so consider minimizing your everyday carry or upgrade your bag game.
10. The Denim Jacket You Wear With Everything
Your denim jacket doesn't have to relegated to casual rigs anymore, nor does it actually have to be blue. Consider this slick white one paired over a Breton striped shirt, faded denim, and canvas kicks. It easily doubles as a layer under a heavier jacket, and makes the transition to dressing up with a pair of navy chinos, blue shirt, and a solid knit tie. Shhh... Do you hear that? It's the sound of your blazers getting jealous.
11. The Peak Performance Suit
You wanna dress sharp? Get a suit that takes it literally. Peak lapels are a bold style usually associated with tuxedos and other formalwear, but they've hit critical mass this year. Why is this particular style so sought after right now? Well, take a look at Bryan Cranston—they transform your suit from Walter White to Heisenberg.
